Why do you run?
I run. I run short distances and long distances, road and trail…slowly. I never truly enjoy running. So, why do I do it? It’s just what people do…they run…they race…they collect medals. Well, to that…I say phooey! I recently realized that I don’t actually enjoy running, I run because that’s just what everyone I know does! I see all their Runkeeper and Nike+ statuses and I think, “Man, I should be out there running.” No, no I should not. There are so many other ways to stay active I’m not sure why I succumbed to the oldest ploy in the book…”everybody’s doing it!”
Should you run? I don’t know. What I do know is you have to answer that for yourself by asking yourself this question, “Do I enjoy running?” The question is not, “Is running a good method of fitness?” or “Will I lose weight by running.” The answer to those questions is yes. The question you should be asking is, “Does running fill me with passion and excitement?” If the answer is “No”, don’t do it!
Some say that Pookie and The Bear are “serial hobbiests”. We are, there is no denying that. What they are missing is that we are constantly seeking things that fill us with fire and passion. Ghalib said, “The heart is an embarrassment to the chest if it’s not on fire. Releasing a breath brings shame if it’s not a fountain of flame.”
Go out there and find your passion. Maybe it’s running, maybe it’s biking or maybe it’s walking upside down on your hands! Whatever your passion is that makes you happy is what you should be doing. Never stop looking for it because you will find it and when you do find it you may find yourself flying down a hill, standing up on your bike yelling, “WEEEE!!!! I’m flying!!!!!”
