When is the right time?
It will never be the perfect time and if you wait for it, you may miss out on some really amazing experiences. When you take a chance and you keep your options open you make yourself available for opportunities that may not have presented themselves otherwise.
The Bear and I have always been wild dreamers, but we’ve always just that….dreamers, not do’ers. We enjoy travelling but we are just like you, we go to work every day to pay for a house to keep stuff in that we buy with the money we make at our jobs. We do a bit of travelling, but it’s usually pretty low budget and it has to be scheduled around our employers. We were both raised with the thought that you grow up, you get a job, you retire and you die and that was just the way it is. Wake up and take a look around….those jobs that had pensions and retirements are few and far between. Social Security? Good luck with that. Let’s say you worked hard all your life and saved your money and then you invested it or bought a house and lost it all? Now what are you supposed to do at 65 years old and broke? Go back to work? What about your health, is that guaranteed? Even if you did everything right, you may never see retirement because you could get hit by a bus tomorrow. You are taking a bigger risk by waiting than you are if you go after your dreams tomorrow. So, that’s what we decided to do.
Right now we are sitting on an airplane travelling 1200 miles to pick up our RV. We are hittin’ the road, toad! We’re not going full-time tomorrow but we are actively taking the steps we need to take to get out there. We thought about waiting until “the perfect time” but we looked at each other and said, “ F*&@ It!” Really, what did we have to lose? So here we are on a plane.
Now, here’s the most important part about timing. When we decided to not wait and just go for it, everything just fell into place. My awesome Dad gave us the perfect RV, Bear started looking at vocational opportunities to prepare him for life on the road and that perfect timing got him hooked up with grant that could pay for commercial driving school and remote job opportunities started hitting me from every direction. All the things that we worried about and thought we had to wait for the perfect time to be lined up started lining up for us when we took action to make our dreams a reality. Let me say that again, in case you missed that…. WE TOOK ACTION. Your dreams aren’t going to come true on their own. All those things that you are sitting there wishing you could do, unless you do something about it, you’re not going to do it. They will always be just some pin on a dream board. Take that dream board and rename it a goal board. Sit down and really think about what you want and what you have to do to get there. Set smaller milestones. How do you eat an elephant? You know the answer to this…one bite at a time. If you want to do something, do it.
